What is Xylitol?

Feb 13, 2017
Xylitol has just recently become a trend in sweeteners and other dental care products.
Xylitol has just recently become a trend in sweeteners and other dental care products. It was first discovered in the late 19th century. However, it was known by very few people until the 1950s and on into the present day. Xylitol is a type of sugar alcohol that is mainly sourced from corn, but it can also be made from birch trees. Xylitol is just as sweet as sugar, yet it doesn’t have the same effect on the body as traditional sugar from sugarcane. Blood sugar and insulin levels should remain stable after digesting xylitol as opposed to spiking like they would in response to regular sugar.

Many consumers are inspired to switch from certain artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and saccharin (found in many diet soda brands) to xylitol, as it is considered to be much more natural and safer. Better yet, xylitol sweetened products are also believed to be better for your teeth than other artificially sweetened foods and drinks. Here are a few great xylitol products that might make your smile a little bit healthier!

Xylitol Gum

Xylitol gum can be found in many health and wellness stores and might help prevent plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth. Not only does xylitol protect your teeth from bacteria, but it also has natural hydrating properties. If you’re suffering from bad breath due to dry mouth, consider switching to a xylitol gum!

Xylitol Toothpaste

As mentioned before, xylitol is great at preventing bacterial infections in the mouth. Therefore, swapping out your old toothpaste for one with xylitol could potentially prevent cavities better than traditional brands. If you find yourself consistently developing cavities despite regular brushing, using a xylitol toothpaste might give your mouth the added protection it needs.

Mouth Spray

Xylitol is an excellent, natural treatment for dry mouth. Left untreated, chronic dry mouth can be extremely uncomfortable and even cause your gums to bleed. Xylitol encourages natural saliva products, and the spray products will give you a burst of fresh breath as well! It might also help to soothe and heal any cuts or irritation that you may have due to chronic dry mouth.
