Emergency Dentist Q & A

What does an emergency dentist do?

An emergency dentist treats dental and mouth injuries that need immediate attention. Emergency dental situations usually involve saving knocked-out or broken teeth. Coming into Tenth Street Family Dental within 30 minutes of your tooth or mouth injury could mean the difference between saving or losing the tooth.

Are you in need of emergency dental care?

If you're worried about a severe mouth injury you or a family member has sustained, it's the right time to call an emergency dentist. Immediate treatment calls for immediate action. Common dental emergencies often include:

  • Knocked-out teeth
  • A loose permanent tooth
  • Severe tooth or mouth pain
  • Bleeding inside your mouth from your cheeks, tongue, or gums
  • An injury to your mouth or face
  • Swelling in your gums, tongue, or mouth
  • A badly cracked or broken tooth
  • A cut or tear on your lips

You may not be dealing with a dental emergency if you chip a tooth but it doesn't appear as if you'll lose the tooth entirely. Even so, it’s a good idea to contact one of the experienced dentists at Tenth Street Family Dental so they can tell you how to handle your tooth until you can get to the office.

What do I do with a knocked-out tooth?

Act quickly, and there's a good chance you can save a knocked-out tooth. If you don’t receive immediate dental care, you may be at risk of losing the tooth. To try and save the tooth, start by cleaning the injured tooth and the inside of your mouth. Rinse your mouth and tooth with lukewarm water. Do your best to avoid touching the tooth's roots.

Gently handle the tooth by the crown (top) as you rinse it. If possible, try to place it back into the socket in your gum where it came out. Close your mouth and bite down gently on the tooth, if you can. It might help to bite down on a soft piece of gauze until you can visit Tenth Street Family Dental. Call the office right away, or have someone call for you who can explain the situation.

If you are unable to place the tooth back into its socket, put your tooth in a small cup of milk to help preserve it until you get to the dental office. Don't let a broken tooth prevent you from enjoying your smile. Call Tenth Street Family Dental for expert assistance in the event of a dental emergency.
